Good Physical and mental health is very important for every life, it helps us to enjoy life and cope with problems. It offers a feeling of well-being, inner strength and makes us self-motivated for progressive life and increases our potential to handle circumstances very patiently. Just as we must take care of our body by eating, exercising and other disciplined aspects, we must not forget the importance of sleep in our precious life.

Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout our life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help ensure our mental health, physical health, and quality of life. According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), sleep is very essential for a person’s health and well-being, yet millions of people do not get enough sleep and many suffer from lack of sleep. For example, surveys conducted by the NSF (1999-2004) reveal that at least 40 million Americans suffer from over 70 different sleep disorders and 60 percent of adults report having sleep problems a few nights a week or more.

Getting a good night's sleep won't grant you immunity from disease. But study after study has found a link between insufficient sleep and some serious health problems, such as heart disease, heart attacks, diabetes, and obesity. Insufficient sleep may also cause other symptoms like headache, sleep disorders, difficulty in concentrating, short-temper, upset stomach, Job dissatisfaction, low morale, depression, anxiety etc.

Every individual’s sleep needs vary. In general, most healthy adults are built for 16 hours of wakefulness and need an average of eight hours of sleep a night. However, some individuals are able to function without sleepiness or drowsiness after as little as six hours of sleep. Others can't perform at their peak unless they've slept ten hours. And, contrary to common myth, the need for sleep doesn't decline with age but the ability to sleep for six to eight hours at one time may be reduced.

So, from the above article, we conclude that sleep plays an important and vital role in our quality of life and hence, we must take proper sleep in order to have good physical and mental health.
